Sitting outside, we settle into a cosy bench at the front of the cafe. First up, however, the menu features an array of Mod Oz favourites with a gourmet European twist. They even offer takeaway picnic hampers if you need to hit the beach, pronto.

My espresso is intense and sharp, awakening both palate and mind. There’s a woody aroma with spicy flavours carried through the dense body. The aftertaste is crisp, leaving a dry winey sensation across the palate. My latte, on the other hand, has a mild chocolate undertone and is both creamy and robust. Partnered with a brunch of truffled eggs and toast, this is how all weekends should start.

And it’s easy to see why. The cosy den-like surroundings are complemented by super-friendly staff and a comfort-food menu (think ready-made panini, thick-cut raisin toast and mains like salmon risotto or slow-cooked beef on mash).

It’s also a great place for a caffeine fix, as the queue of punters proves. Despite the crush, there’s no rushing; each coffee is made with care by a barista who obviously loves his job. Unsurprisingly, it’s superb. The herbal aroma of my espresso gives way to a complex wine-like brew: tart and thick on the tongue, with a pleasantly strong acidity and long finish. With milk, the flavour is similarly robust but somewhat sweeter (although this could be the surprise chocolate centre of my accompanying raspberry muffin).

Not all there? On the contrary -this place has it in spades.
