Campos Specialty Coffee have just launched Sydney’s very first Cupping Room at their flagship store in Newtown. Not just for tasting coffee, the Cupping Room offers a complete theatrical experience which aims to educate guests on the humble coffee bean and what goes on beyond the espresso machine.
Consumers are led up a mysterious flight of stairs into a room deliberately darkened to heighten the senses. White cups spaced along a stainless steel bench is the starting point and the means by which participants are guided through the first stages of the tasting. ‘Cupping’ is actually the term which describes the ‘evaluation’ process that happens when coffee beans are bought and sold direct from growers around the world, a concept which is explained in each session.
For a nominal cost ($8.80 – 45 min), the Cupping Room is available for groups of 2 – 8 (quality not quantity), offering curious coffee drinkers and connoisseurs alike an educational experience on the different and often complex characteristics of coffee beans sourced from around the world. Sessions will run Tuesday – Fridays at 7:30am and 1pm, and Saturday at 8:30am, 1pm and 3pm.
What a fantastic idea – is this still running? Would love to send some new staff and customers along.
