The Coffee Guide (TCG): What coffee do you use at work?
Josh: I’m lucky enough to get to use coffee from 24 different roasters around Melbourne and Victoria including Proud Mary, Padre, Clark Street, Industry Roasters and our own 1961 house-blend roasted at CoffeeHead in Camberwell.
TCG: How do you have your coffee at home? How do you make it and how do you take it?
Josh: I don’t really drink coffee at home, but I’ve been thinking about getting a V60 at home and experimenting with some cool pour over techniques that I’ve been researching recently.
TCG: What’s the best thing about your job- the one thing that you really love aside from the coffee?
Josh: I love the fact that I don’t have to sit in an office in front of a computer or desk. I get to drink awesome coffee and chat to people about it all day. Livin’ the dream really.
TCG: What is your favourite music? (For work or for play)
Josh: I have a pretty broad taste in music, but I suppose the music I dig the most is some cool folk music. I’m in a band and we play this kind of stuff so I listen to it all the time, work and play really doesn’t matter. Check us out…
TCG: If you’re not drinking coffee, what is your drink of choice?
Josh: Pomegranate juice is the bomb.
TCG: What made you become a barista?
Josh: I started working in cafes when I was younger and was always super interested in specialty coffee. Ever since then my passion for coffee has grown and I’m lucky enough that I had people around me that saw how keen I was and I eventually started making coffee with them.
TCG: Does your coffee style (or how you drink it) say something about you?
Josh: I don’t think so. I try to drink coffees in different ways so I don’t get stuck on a particular way of having a coffee, or a particular brewing method.
TCG: Who would make a better coffee, King Kong or Godzilla?’
Josh: Godzilla for sure! King Kong’s hands are too big, but then again Godzilla has a dirty big head. I don’t know.
TCG: What has been your favourite moment as a barista? Is there one story that only happened to you because you are a barista?
Josh: One time I made coffee for The Beards. That was pretty sweet.
TCG: Where is your favourite place to hang out in Victoria?
Josh: The surf. Anywhere on the Mornington Peninsula.
TCG: What did you do on your last day off?
Josh: I went snowboarding…good times.
TCG: In a good cup of coffee, how much of it is due to the barista and how much is due to the beans?
Josh: It’s fairly 50-50 I think.
TCG: Is decaf a dirty word?
Josh: Not as dirty as extra-hot, skinny, weak, decaf latte in a mug with chocolate on top.
TCG: What is your favourite kind of tea?
Josh: A nice Earl Grey goes down a treat.
TCG: What is your favourite alternate brewing method?
Josh: I love a good pour over, however I’ve recently been doing a lot of research into siphon coffee, but I haven’t had much experience working with the method. So tasty though.
TCG: Where do you see alternate brewing methods going?
Josh: So far! They’re already becoming a lot more popular these days and so they should. It’s rad for people to be able to experience coffees in other ways rather than just the traditional espresso. I’m pretty excited to see what the crazy coffee scientists come up with next!
