Maison Ama Lurra opens in North Melbourne

Recently opened in the inner-city hub of North Melbourne, fine coffee and teahouse Maison Ama Lurra is a welcome addition to the area’s cafe culture.

The cafe serves its own Ama Lurra brand of coffee, which is both organic and Rainforest Alliance certified. The cafe’s Dalla Corte machine is helmed by former Sydney native and award-winning barista, Tristan Creswick (2009 NSW latte art champion).

The menu draws heavily from the culinary traditions of Western Europe, the signature dish being the tartines, a modern twist on the traditional French open sandwich. The tartines are presented as a deconstructed open sandwich, with customers choosing they type of bread they prefer and the accompaniments, served on a platter.

“We wanted to offer something a little different from the standard cafe fare, so we looked to our European roots for inspiration,” co-founder Philippe Million said. “This is something that extends to our approach to tea, which we take as much care with as our coffee.”

That tea is iconic French brand, Mariage Frères, prepared with water boiled to exactly 95 degrees (or 70 degrees for the green tea) and served in cast iron pots.

Located on Howard Street, between the bustle of the Queen Victoria Markets and the retail strip of Errol Street, Maison Ama Lurra sits inside a converted warehouse. The spacious interior offers relaxed sofas as well as both individual and larger communal tables.

Maison Ama Lurra was designed not only to be a place of recreation but as a functional space for local businesses as well. Large meeting rooms equipped with tables and whiteboards are available free of charge, along with high speed Wi-Fi. Several iPads are available for loan, also free of charge.

“We are excited about opening Maison Ama Lurra in North Melbourne,” Philippe said. “There is so much going on in the this suburb and we hope to be a hub for that activity.”
