Challenge to find Australia’s best barista is on again

Australia’s most celebrated coffee competition is back this May 2011 with some exciting new format and prize developments. The Danes Grand Barista Championship is the region’s most respected competition of its kind and is an opportunity for the country’s top baristas to display their creativity and skill to a host of industry leaders and coffee enthusiasts.

At stake this year is a trip to Thailand where the winner of the Australian Final will compete against the region’s best in the Australasian Final on 18 September 2011, part of the Restaurant and Bar Exhibition.

Now in its ninth year, the Danes Grand Barista Championship will see some exciting format changes to best simulate the authentic cafĂ© experience and challenges that baristas are faced with. Competitors will be required to make four espressos, four milk coffees and four non-espresso type coffees. Included in the final category is a requirement to produce a black non-espresso and as many “express latte art coffees” they can manage in the allowed timeframe.

Baristas in the competition will have just 10 minutes, down from 12, to create their repertoire of coffees. They will be judged by a panel of industry experts on the criteria of taste evaluation, beverage presentation, barista technique, personal presentation and service to judges.

Four heats set for the end of May will culminate in the final on 2 June, all to be held at Danes Gourmet Coffee Brookvale headquarters.

Heats: Mon 30 May and Tues 31 May 2011
Australian Final: Wed 1 June 2011

Danes Gourmet Coffee, 28 Dale Street, Brookvale
