67 King Street, Sydney, NSW, 2000

On an early mid-week morning, Mecca Espresso is packed with devoted followers who flock here for their daily fix. But there are still free tables for breakfast on the King Street sidewalk.

While there are plenty of treats to choose from, the coffee menu is more extensive yet. The team source only the finest beans from around the globe, which they also roast and then sell on site. The aroma of my flat white has sweet caramel undertones, and there’s an elegant acidity and creamy, rich body.

We can’t come all this way without tasting the Ethiopia Yirgacheffe filter coffee, which is a completely different style to the Italian espresso norm: the aroma of apricot draws you in to a sweet but round flavour, which slowly fades from your mouth.

Worth the pilgrimage.
