Ten Questions With… Zar Bingham

Ten Questions with Zar Bingham: Owner/Barista at ZarBar- 2/8 Clarke Street, Crows Nest.

1.TCG: If you weren’t a barista what would you be?
Zar: A cook

2.TCG:How do you have your coffee at home?
Zar: I have a little Gaggia that Jason from 9Bar gave me as a housewarming present. I’ve just about perfected a double shot skim latte.

3.TCG:What’s the best thing about your job- the one thing that you really love aside from the coffee?
Zar: Without a doubt, the people. Being a big part of their lives and giving them love through coffee. I LOVE the ZarBar family.

4.TCG: What is your favourite music?
Zar: Some people would say I have pretty questionable taste in music. I like something with a beat for the morning peak. I play quite a few of the MofS Chillout albums. I played John Farnham this afternoon!!

5.TCG: What’s your favourite food? Why?
Zar: Breakfast. Muesli, Bircher muesli, granola, oats, Weetbix- anything cereal based. I’m a morning person.

6.TCG: Tell us what your best (or first) coffee experience was.
Zar: Emigrating to Sydney from the UK, I was introduced to good coffee by Bacino in Manly when they opened and I was a 4-5 a day regular on the weekends!

7.TCG: If you’re not drinking coffee, what is your drink of choice?
Zar: English Breakfast tea (leaf only), or water. Both are really refreshing. Peppermint tea at night.

8.TCG: What made you become a barista?
Zar: It was the one skill I was missing in terms of the industry. I loved watching barista’s working. It’s the most fun you can have at work. It’s the perfect combination of science and creativity.

9.TCG:What food do you think is the best compliment to a really great coffee? Why?
Zar: Chocolate brownie – it’s a no brainer!

Where do all the old baristas go?
Zar: They’re in a retirement home in Victoria. They talk about the old days – who did the most kg’s in one day, compare the weights of their tampers and tell barista jokes.
