St Ali is to Melbourne as Mocha is to Yemen, except that this famed coffee trading spot is bustling with professionals and fashionables on their way to work. Thereís a fevered hubbub of coffee-questers is this warehouse tavern, mingling around the silver Synesso, sipping on a Siphon brewed drop, and with a glorious Cold Drip Filter just round the corner, you canít help but catch the contagion.
The space seems packed, but waitering dynamos manage to navigate the influx of pilgrims, and Mediterranean and Middle Eastern spices prevail from the kitchen. St Ali Nights sees the warehouse open its doors for dinner. On my visit, I devour the coconut soup with rice stock noodles, followed by twice cooked duck.
The short black is capricious and captivating. Satiny on the tongue, it’s like a dervish of flavours: now sweet as muscatel, now dry as vintage white; now breathtaking in acidity, now softer with sesame. All that mellows with milk and becomes tranquil, meditative. An astonishing experience.
