633 Bourke Street, Surry Hills, NSW, 2010
Wearing exercise gear, pyjamas, the latest fashions and the oddest trends, the Surry Hills crowd convenes in the morning line that spills out of Bourke St Bakery every day. On a weekend visit, the queue is even longer, although the speedy and efficient staff ensure itís constantly moving.
It may look packed, but there are often tables available inside the matchbox-sized bakery-cafe, as most people dash off with their daily bread wrapped in brown paper, clutching a takeaway coffee. We sit for sublime sandwiches: paired with the Aroma blend coffee, they make for the perfect refuelling.
The espresso is smoky and aromatic, like a fine cigar, and its deep flavour calls for something sweet on the side. (Luckily we’re at the home of some Sydney’s finest tarts.) The cappuccino is dreamy and rich, with perfectly frothed milk that glides like velvet. One taste and you’ll be ready to line up all over again.
