255 Devonshire Street, Surry Hills, NSW, 2010

Gourmet bibliophiles are at home at The Book Kitchen, which must’ve been born out of someone’s stomach rumbling while browsing a bookstore. This converted garage in Surry Hills has a special blend of Single Origin Roasters coffee, a cute and inventive menu and a vast array of food books -all ready to be devoured.

With a concrete floor and corrugated iron roof, the chatter of inner-city brunchers bounces around the room (an atmosphere far removed from the local library). After browsing the menu – with its classic and new dishes utilising organic and free-range produce where possible – we’re free to browse the books, and the large communal table affords plenty of space to spread out and indulge in some heavy reading.

The cappuccino is mild, and the length of flavour is a novella at best; however, an espresso carries the rich bitterness of dark chocolate, with a lingering and pleasant acidity that is truly epic.
