22 Union Street, Pyrmont, NSW, 2009
It’s not every day you see Truffle Butter Linguini with Coddled Eggs and Reggiano on a cafe’s blackboard menu, but for XXII, which doubles as a lunch venue for Pyrmont’s black-clad executives, indulgent dishes are as commonplace as takeaway espresso.
This pithily named cafe is polished, without committing the cardinal sin of feeling ‘corporate’. This feat is achieved by XXII’s chilled music, rustic decor and friendly waitstaff.
The flavoursome coffee doesn’t hurt either. After walking through three different dining areas, I order a flat white and am met with a dreamy, white-chocolate concoction which pleasantly coats the mouth (despite being a little on the large side). It’s overshadowed only by the intensity of XXII’s star hitter, the short black: a sharp and oily espresso which cools to reveal the crisp tang of ripe tomatoes. It’s a promising start to the day -now for that truffled business lunch.
