45 Reservoir Street, SurryHills, NSW, NSW
Toast’s luminous interior is a stark contrast to the industrial surrounds of Surry Hills’ backstreets. The vibrant space features cushions adorned with Asian characters, Japanese cast-iron teapots and bamboo frames; the menu, however, is a more global affair, supplemented by a retail wall of preserves, oils, teas, cookbooks and Toby’s Estate coffee beans.
True to its name, the cafe’s toast is something special, with a wide selection of gourmet breads and condiments. The more adventurous or toast-averse might try the renowned Mexican Breakfast of scrambled eggs, coriander, jalapenos, salsa and sour cream -one of the more unique brekkies going around.
My cappuccino is coated in a luscious layer of chocolate (delicious, but difficult to penetrate for a coffee profile). The milk is frothed to perfection, with an agreeably higher viscosity than the espresso that follows. A significantly more bitter flavour, possibly due to over-extraction, doesn’t ruin the pleasant shot -nor the boast of a Toasty morning.
