Is this the cheapest coffee in Sydney? A regular sets you back $2, and if you buy seven you get the eighth free. However, you get what you (don’t) pay for: seating is limited to lacklustre tables on the footpath, and milk-based coffees are served in disposable cups, even if you’re dining in.
The richness of the cappuccino defies its price: a blanket of glorious foam hides a smoky brew with faint almond characteristics. A short black hides nothing, with regal shiraz flavours, pure and vibrant, under a thick crema.
The menu is limited, featuring Harry’s Cafe de Wheels pies and hot dogs, but it’s incredible they can fit food in there at all. The Ethiopian Yirgacheffe beans are Fairtrade certified, and if you share your interest in coffee with owner Chant, he’s quick to explain the superior quality of Ethiopian coffee, proudly taking out some beans to show off their glistening appearance. The smiles and enthusiasm of the staff at One Origin prove that sometimes passion comes with a low price tag.
