Mezzapica is a well-established Italian cafe, situated right next door to its big sister, the iconic Mezzapica Cakes. With that pedigree, the sweets are second to none, and there’s a selection of home made gelato in a myriad of colours and flavours.

A corner position makes it ideal for a spot of people-watching over a leisurely breakfast. It tends to get busy, so a little patience is rewarded (and we also notice the female customers getting attention earlier). But the atmosphere is upbeat and the waitstaff are accommodating.

As for the coffee, the barista makes it with so much love you can see the heart jumping out of the cup as it arrives. A wonderful aroma of soft chocolate is equally amorous. The crema isn’t the thickest I’ve seen, but does stay around the rim. The shot is dense, with a full-bodied kick, and enjoys a smooth, velvety aftertaste that sadly doesn’t linger for long enough. Fortunately, the cakes do.
