Barista of the Week… Kylie Honeysett Barista and Roaster at
Campos, 11 Wandoo Street, Fortitude Valley, QLD
The Coffee Guide (TCG): If you weren’t a barista what would you be?
Kylie: I would be either a Roaster or a makeup artist.
TCG: How do you have your coffee at home? How do you make it and how do you take it?
Kylie: Stovetop or plunger, black.
TCG: What’s the best thing about your job- the one thing that you really love aside from the coffee?
Kylie: The ongoing education and opportunities and the early starts…
TCG: What is your favourite music? (For work or for play).
Kylie: Apocalyptica – 4 cellos playing metal.
TCG: What’s your favourite food?
Kylie: Food and I do not get along that well…I like vegetables because vegetables like me.
TCG: Tell us what your best (or first) coffee experience was.
Kylie: Best was making Campos for the first time. First was being told that you make a long black by pressing the shot button over and over until your cup was full…
TCG: If you’re not drinking coffee, what is your drink of choice?
Kylie: I like Martinis, but that’s not always practical. Tea, there’s one for every situation.
TCG: What made you become a barista?
Kylie: I love coffee and so many people do a rubbish job of it, I wanted to change that.
TCG: Do people often try and chat you up at work?
Kylie: Never, well not customers…I owe the last 3 happy years to a work colleague’s ‘chat up’.
TCG: How many coffees would you make in the average day?
Kylie: On a busy day, my maths isn’t great, but 400 maybe.
TCG: What’s the largest amount of coffees you have made in a day?
Kylie: See above, give a little maybe…
TCG: Does your coffee style (or how you drink it) say something about you?
Kylie: I like nice things…a bad long black is, well, bad.
TCG: Where do all the old baristas go?
TCG: Who would make a better coffee, King Kong or Godzilla?’
Kylie: They are fictional animals and thus can’t make coffee, I don’t like pretending animals are human.
TCG: Where has your coffee making taken you?
Kylie: The valley and back again each day. Haha, I went to Sydney a couple of times.
TCG: If you could pick one spot in the world to sit and have a coffee, where would it be, what coffee would you have and why?
Kylie: Paris. Un express because I can’t drink milk and because its Paris!
TCG: As a barista, what’s your next big plan?
Kylie: I actually really love what I’m doing, I’m a barista and a roaster. So my big plan is to not get fired and to master both crafts.
TCG: Where is your favourite place to hang out in Queensland?
Kylie: My home, everything I need is usually there.
TCG: Do you have any pets?
Kylie: I have a cat, he is black and called Chu Chu. He is very pretty.
TCG: What did you do on your last day off?
Kylie: Um, the washing and geeked it up on the computer playing games.
TCG: In a good cup of coffee, how much of it is due to the barista and how much is due to the beans?
Kylie: An ill informed barista can ruin the very best of beans.
TCG: Is decaf a dirty word?
Kylie: Maybe she is pregnant or caffeine sensitive???
TCG: What is your favourite kind of tea?
Kylie: Licorice Legs.
TCG: What is your favourite alternate brewing method?
Kylie: I like Syphon, but I think cold drip is good for summer.
