51 Queen Street, Melbourne, VIC, 3000
Situated inside the foyer of an office building, Home Barista Institute seems an unlikely spot for a cafe. Its decor too is more office fit-out than cutting-edge cafe, but it hits the caffeine spot for local workers. An orange Ruggero machine takes pride of place on one bench, while the other houses a glass cabinet filled with sandwiches, salads, quiches and soft drinks. A TV above the serving area plays coffee art and espresso-making videos.
This Queen Street shop is loosely affiliated with HBI in West Melbourne and, although there are no barista classes run here, staff will pass on details to the West Melbourne store. This branch is all about instant gratification, and a long black is medium-bodied with fleeting nutty notes. There is a sweetness to the brew but it disappears quickly, leaving no aftertaste. A latte is light-bodied, with a slight earthy taste, and the milk is well textured. HBI also sells plenty of coffee paraphernalia, including beans, tampers, thermometers and milk jugs. A word to the wise: head here before your 3pm slump as HBI closes earlier than many city cafes.
