66 Bourke Street, Melbourne, VIC, 3000

A veritable Melbourne icon, Pellegrini’s has been serving up generous portions of home-style Italy for decades. The owner proudly proclaims that Pellegrini’s had ‚”the first real espresso machine in Melbourne”, which isn’t hard to believe when you spy the decor -with its old-school wood veneer and utilitarian furnishings. Today, a Vittoria-branded Faema E91 Diplomat looms on the bench.

The espresso comes in a traditional demitasse, with a solid crema. A spicy aroma arises -typical of Vittoria coffee. Also typical is the almost complete lack of nuance, traded instead for raw caffeine horsepower and brute force. If you crave a morning heart-starter and aren’t looking for subtlety, this is the place for you. Even the latte is as subtle as a brick through a plate-glass window. This is, however, one of the few places that could be forgiven for its lack of nuance: Pellegrini’s doesn’t try to be anything more than a traditional Italian Espresso bar with Italian home-style dishes. Don’t ask for fine dining -you’ll just be met with confused looks and knockout coffee.
