Tucked away in a brick building at the back of a private car park, Monk Bodhi Dharma rewards those who seek it out. With stripped-back brick walls, dark timber and light globes hanging from exposed beams, it’s small and snug inside but doesn’t feel cramped. A former bootmaker’s workbench that has found new life here as a communal table fits plenty, and there’s a few small tables, too. Staff are friendly, welcoming and happy to chat about the specialty coffee and tea available here.
A rotating selection of seasonal single estate beans is roasted onsite and offered through the espresso machine or as syphon or pour over. A short black, made with Brazilian beans, is honey-sweet, with cherries and dark chocolate mingling in the brew. A latte is prettily decorated, with a soft and nutty texture. There’s also an extensive tea menu, including healing varieties. The healthy mantra continues in the entirely vegetarian menu, with most dishes also available in vegan versions. There’s all-day breakfast, plus a soup, curry or stew of the day. Nourishing food, excellent coffee and tea – it’s an enlightening experience.
