A visit to Sasa’s is like Grandma’s on a Sunday afternoon. There are floral decals on the walls, colourful vintage chairs, timber tables and Florentine cabinetry. Piles of magazines and a mess of crayons fill a wrought-iron shelf, while Mozart fills the airy space. Best of all, there are high-tea delights such as home-made date scones, passionfruit cake, brownies and pink-topped cupcakes. For the time-poor and hungry, there’s also a wide selection of takeaway fare like home-made pies and moussaka.
The crowd is a little older, and most of them appear to know the owner, who exudes the graciousness and warmth of yesteryear. Meanwhile, a sign on the window boasts an award-winning barista in residence, so expectations are high. And they’re not disappointed. My Genovese espresso exhibits all that is admired about Italian-style coffee‚ spicy aromatics, sturdy texture and a racy acidity mellowed by the combination of nuts and herbs, which stamp the palate with a long and satisfying aftertaste. A very expert Grandma indeed.
