Shop 33 South Melb Market, South Melbourne, VIC, 3205

Buried deep within South Melbourne Market, Padre had only been open for a few months at the time of this review. However, it has already established a name (and not just the self-proclaimed ‘hand-crafted coffee specialists’); armed with glistening Synesso and Mazza hardware, it has the artillery to back it up.

The shop is small, but the space is well utilised. It’s evocatively lit, and has ample shelves and display cases housing coffee-related paraphernalia for sale. Aside from a few muffins and cupcakes on display, the menu is limited to coffee only, of which there’s a good selection of blends and single origins.

Settling on the house ‘Padre Blend’, my espresso has a deep reddish-brown crema, and a vaguely nutty aroma. Rich earthy flavours, a pleasant and balanced acidity, and a long smooth finish. With the same blend, my latte loses much of the depth and richness. While beautifully made and very drinkable, I find it a little shallow when compared to my straight shot -which perhaps was too well crafted to improve on.
