130 Lygon Street, Brunswick East, VIC, 3057

This strip of Lygon Street might be awash with some of Melbourne’s hottest new cafes and restaurants, but the running sheet for the ultimate Brunswick East evening remains unchanged: 1. eat green chicken curry al fresco at Thaila Thai; 2. stroll with pistachio gelato from Gelo Bar; 3. neck an espresso at Small Block.

On weekend mornings, hordes of Brunswegians descend for nifty variations on classic dishes, such as poached eggs on cornbread with beetroot relish and fetta. Service standards are as eclectic as the Brunswick clientele, veering from friendly to aloof to MIA, especially during the breakfast rush, but it’s all part of Small Block’s ragged charm.

The coffee is excellent, although the house style for milk coffees tends to favour latte over caffe. The fruity aroma of the espresso announces a welcome citric tang, which is followed by a lightly earthy aftertaste that lingers on the palate.
