MIDALI

261 Carlisle Street, Balaclava, VIC, 3183

Michael and David’s Little espresso bar is slim and narrow but conspicuously red hot, like a Ferrari parked between white sedans. But its arresting design isn’t the major attraction; that would be the live televised coverage of the action at the espresso machine, which screens all day on the plasma TV.

Tasty breakfasts are hard to concentrate on, as we watch, rapt, as sinewy arms twist, turn and tap to achieve the fine signature frond found on top of each coffee.

Espressos race to tables in white, four-cornered cups – fresh, frothy and fruity. Their swanky slick bodies surrender a zippy acidity, well-balanced flavour and crisp finish. My latte, with its musky aroma, sprints through a variety of flavours: earthy, sour and then a rush of raisin toast. All coffees leave little trace of the traction just tasted. Only vim and vigour linger.
