NINETEEN SQUARES CAFE

31 Blessington Street, St Kilda, VIC, 3182

This miniature treasure trove’s 19 square metres of bohemian charm spill out onto a leafy street strewn with random tables, chairs, stools and the odd milk crate or six. This little gem has a vein of gold running through its eclectic heart.

There’s a warm, everyone-knows-everyone vibe set to the chill sounds of Damien Rice. Add a quirky touch, including rows of collectors’ teaspoons (not for sale) and brightly coloured, reusable KeepCups (for sale). Toss in a small but appealing menu, featuring eggs poached in a terracotta pot with chorizo or grilled veg, and a World-Famous Chicken Sanga. Finish with a shot of Coffee Supreme’s Fair Trade Organic, and you’re on a winning streak.

My espresso is rich and earthy, yet elegant -a dance of finely-balanced bitter-sweetness on the tongue and a lingering spiced-chocolate finish. After a chat with the well-informed barista, there’s a creamy cappuccino¬† to follow, creatively topped with chocolate shavings. Pure gold.
