543 High Street, Prahran, VIC, 3181

Judging by the general hubbub and the multi-generational groups chatting around communal tables, this joint is a hit with locals. The French country-kitchen ambience is conducive to a long weekend lunch, and the menu boasts enticing dishes such as Pad Thai Omelette with Chilli Rock Sugar. If there’s just two of you, enjoy a tete-a-tete and a cuppa in a cosy corner.

My espresso is a trifle thin and could do with more complexity, but I’m enjoying its liquorice and burnt toffee flavours. It’s short on finish but feels clean and refreshing in the mouth. I also try a well-executed latte which has cocoa characteristics and a pleasant nutty aroma. The crema is excellent. Put this place on your weekend to-do list, and check out the giant Chinese lanterns hanging above the kitchen, too.

Sino-Francophiles will have a ball.
