Melbourne’s West has an unfortunate reputation as a bit of a coffee wasteland. Until, that is, you stumble upon Nabiha. Named for the owners’ late aunt, the Breathe Architecture-designed space feels like a modern espresso bar off a cobbled city laneway, with clean lines, recycled-timber floors, bare concrete walls and modern white tables. They managed to squeeze in a tiny kitchen, which turns out simple, tasty food inspired by the owners’ Italian and Middle Eastern heritage.

At the time of our review, Nabiha has only been open for a couple of weeks -but the coffee is already a standout. Perhaps this is to be expected, what with a barista from Proud Mary, a sparkly three-group Synesso machine and a blend crafted by 5 Senses. My espresso has an earthy sweet nose, chocolaty characteristics and a velvety mouthfeel with mild acidity. So good I have to grab another.

With soulful James Brown tunes by playing in the background, I leave thinking the West deserves more places like this. Auntie Nabiha would be proud.

Great coffee, but just arrive before 3:30pm as generally lock up then for cleaning and won’t even open the door for a takeaway. The Coffee Club next door opens later if you miss their secret deadline.
