422 George Street, Fitzroy, VIC, 3065
Locals might mourn the loss of artisan bakery Wild Flour, but the best way to get over an old flame is in the arms of a new one. To wit, Min Lokal moved in and Fitzroy was in love again.
Aesthetically, not much has changed: the cumbersome baker’s oven made way for a display case loaded with cakes, a second communal table and a few nick-nacks. The floor staff are impeccably cool – think oversized ’80s glasses, manicured moustaches and sprayed-on jeans – but also super friendly and highly functioning, wheeling out homestyle sandwiches and other morsels with the efficiency of a Casio calculator watch.
This stretch of George Street is leafy and tranquil, and the streetside tables offer a wonderful spot for lingering over an afternoon latte. The coffee here matches the mood. Its dense ginger crema and viscous extraction offer an elegant balance of mild acidity and a nutty aftertaste. No harsh extremes, just caffeine and comfort food.
