194 Faraday Street, Carlton, VIC, 3053
The word ‘institution’ is often bandied about, to the point where its distinction has waned. But if we can revive the term for a minute – perhaps with the aid of an espresso hit – then Brunetti’s is every bit Melbourne’s original coffee institution.
Its pedigree is as Italian as Lygon Street itself, and at busy times it can look like Sienna’s Piazza del Campo – such are the crowds. The interior is a cool interpretation of contemporary European chic; the staff is efficient, if sometimes a little harried.
The espresso has a punchy, nutty nose and a chocolate-coated-cranberry profile that wafts away to a nicely bitter but not inaccessible finish. If you’re looking to escape the crowds, Brunetti probably isn’t the place, but if you’re after a little bit of Italian flair with your latte, then you know how this ends…
