9 Yarra Street, South Yarra, VIC, 3141

This cafe is literally an outpost of St Ali, the legendary South Melbourne-based purveyor of fine coffee well known to readers of this guide. Nestled in the ground floor of a new residential development, the place looks like a country kitchen -and isn’t much bigger than one, either.

The chefs here rustle up a fine breakfast (try the fresh-cut papaya with lemon, pomegranate and yoghurt) or a hearty lunch (the menu boasts slow-roasted pork belly, among other delights). And then, of course, there’s the famous St Ali coffee.

My espresso is complex and rounded, with bold, spicy flavours giving way to a nutty sweetness on the palate; it’s rich and slightly oily with a nutmeg aroma. The latte is pure St Ali, with a perfect body and soothing baked-bread aroma. It has a smooth, robust consistency and is nutty and sweet to taste -no sugar needed. Outpost has already become a firm favourite with the demanding denizens of 3141; now for The Coffee Guide crowd.

Walked up and first impressions were “there’s no one here, not a good sign” as we went to leave we noticed the indoor area & opted to try it. 3 other tables were filled, one table missing an order, another lady sighing loudly due to her extended wait. I ordered a piccolo which tasted more like dirty water than a great Melbourne coffee. Waitress wasn’t great. Atmosphere was average. Not coming back.
