173 Clarendon Street, South Melbourne, VIC, 3205
Refreshing bay breezes waft across South Melbourne and through the large, open windows of Dimattina Cafe on the summery day of our visit. This cafe training venue and batch roaster is designed to soothe, with subdued lighting and a custom-designed wallpaper mural that wraps around two walls and depicts a leafy coffee plantation. Dark timber furnishings complete the colonial ambience.
This beguiling place does breakfast, and boasts an enticing lunch menu of bolognese, risotto, soup, and other hearty dishes best washed down with a good glass of red.
Dimattina sells take-home blends by the bag, and the blend of the week when we visit is a Cuban organic. The polite and friendly barista delivered an espresso that’s sharp and acidic, exhibiting bitter chocolate and earthy Brazil nut flavours. It’s of medium-to-rich viscosity, and the complex flavours linger long on the palate. Aromas of warm cereal and baked bread enhance the experience. The latte is creamy, robust, and slightly caramel with the addition of half a sugar.
