332 Victoria Street, Brunswick, VIC, 3056
Brunswick is cool, in the way that people who are cool don’t need to tell you that they’re cool. Brunswick never told anyone it was cool. The embodiment of this savoir faire is Ray Cafe, on Victoria Street. If you’re looking for an escape from the hubbub of Sydney Road, you won’t find it here. At peak times, this place has a frenetic pulse that bursts with the energy of the recently installed art crowd.
The food is a fantastic conglomerate of Mediterranean, Middle Eastern and Asian influences, well-priced and generously proportioned. The decor is requisitely uncomplicated and is favoured by the locals, most of whom are on a first-name basis with the waitstaff.
The barista works the coffee machine like a shovel-man at the boiler of a steam engine. Thankfully, the quality doesn’t suffer for the formidable output, and the espresso extraction is a creamy brew from Atomica beans, rich and nutty with a long tobacco finish.
