206 High Street, Northcote, VIC, 3070

Proving that old-fashioned style can harmonise with modern sensibilities, nattily dressed brothers Steve and Trevor (love the braces, guys) deliver this recently-opened pitstop to Northcote.

There’s plenty to like here, from the namesake bicycle in the window, to the whitewashed walls and comfortable scatter of wooden tables. While some may find the all-day breakfast menu light on options, the serves are generous, with a strong focus on quality organic and locally-sourced produce (we particularly like the feta and avocado smash on sourdough with a side of fresh chilli). Lunch offerings include hearty salads and sangers, like the inspired chicken, celery and walnut with homemade mayo.

But it’s the coffee that really packs a punch. The house blend delivers a subtle nutty aroma that gives way to a surprisingly tongue-tingling brew. Big on acidity and mouthfeel, its finish is short and sharp. With milk, the nuttiness is accentuated, resulting in a velvety smooth coffee that loses none of its kick. Well worth crossing town for.
