Caffe Romeo shows why cafes, like books, and possibly even people, shouldn’t be judged by appearances. Hidden away in the corner of a nondescript suburban shopping strip, Romeo relies on word of mouth rather than flash decor or splashy architecture. And the word around town is that the coffee here is good – very good – and beloved by locals.

Run by Italian-born coffee purist Stefano and his wife Vicky, the focus is unashamedly on coffee. There’s no menu (just a few pastries), but the place is always busy. Coffee is roasted in house, in a Ferrari-red roaster, and the premium house blend is created from an international selection primarily from South America.

The short black is an easy-sipping example of a great espresso: a fruity, floral aroma; gentle and sweet on the palate. The latte is a harmonious blend of a slightly nutty coffee base with smooth, creamy milk. Appearances be damned – Romeo is winning hearts.
