For the domestically-challenged, Hausfrau is a godsend. This cute-as-a-button bakery specialises in home-style goodies which are perfect for passing off as your own. And there’s plenty to choose from: the changing display – heavily influenced by the owner’s Austrian heritage – sports everything from jammy Linzer tortes to caramelised onion scrolls. We particularly love the mini chocolate cakes topped with rosebuds.

In keeping with all things domestic goddess, the decor is pastel-toned, creating a soothing atmosphere for the largely yummy-mummy clientele. Giant enamel water pitchers and large floral lightshades add a certain country feel.

My espresso, with its dark caramel crema and smoky aroma, has a strong, tarry flavour and good acidity but lacks the mouthfeel I’d expect. It also seems a trifle burnt -a bad day on the coffee machine perhaps? All is forgiven, however, when I try the latte. Super-creamy, its mild acidity is supported by delicate chocolate undertones, resulting in a sweet, lingering finish -just the thing for another run at the cake display.
