669 High Street, Thornbury, VIC, 3071
It’s not easy to build character into a new cafe occupying an old shopfront, but the team at Crunch has managed it with aplomb. The concrete and timber interior is minimalist without being alienating; the nick nacks are cute but not kitsch; the open kitchen provides colour and movement; and the floor-to-ceiling glass that opens onto High Street offers a neatly framed view of passing foot traffic and a leafy side-street beyond. What’s more, the place has a buzzing energy, especially on weekend mornings.
But that comes as no surprise: lingering over a couple of pieces of lightly toasted sourdough dripping with zesty orange and tamarind marmalade, all washed down with a steaming latte, is arguably the best way to start the day this side of Separation Street. The coffee here offers subtle berry aromas and hints of savoury spice. The mouthfeel is light but palate-coating, and well-balanced flavours of nutmeg and pepper are revealed in the lengthy aftertaste. You can’t ask for more character than that.
