83 Gamon Street, Yarraville, VIC, 3013

In a city that prides itself on tiny, tucked-away cafes and bars, Gravy Train Cafe is refreshingly spacious. Three separate areas offer plenty of room for groups, prams or pets: a shaded large front courtyard; the more cosy but buzzy inside room filled with posters about local activities; and a separate back area.

This cafe is not in busy Yarraville Village, but attracts its own share of locals and can be crowded at popular times. A lengthy menu offers breakfast until 4pm, along with lunch and a large selection of cakes.

Those who forego food and order ‚”just a coffee” will still feel special, as it arrives on a tray with a glass of water. The bitter, earthy aroma of my short black fades away quickly, and the first sip reveals a treacly flavour and mouthfeel. The latte has no discernable aroma but it is quite sweet and enjoyable.
