206 Canterbury Road, Canterbury, VIC, 3126
The Maling Room occupies the former post office building that stands sentinel at the end of Maling Road, Canterbury. It’s a timber-surfaced, pram-and-gran-filled joint that brims with the chatter of locals, and attentive staff shimmy and smile through this eclectic mix.
As a micro-roaster, the Maling Room sells bags of single and mixed-estate beans from the likes of Kenya, Honduras, Indonesia and Colombia, and – if what they serve on site is anything to go by – it’s worth picking up a bag as you leave.
My espresso is smooth, fruity and mellow, with rich viscosity and no trace of grit or acidity. The latte is sweet, creamy and mild, and is at the perfect temperature (the menu advises that milk is steamed at 60-65 degrees. In fact, if you want a (too) hot latte you’ve got to ask for it specially.
The breakfast menu (served until 3pm) ranges from hangover cure – a bacon and HP sauce sarnie – to posh eggs drizzled with truffle oil. Make like a parcel and get there.
