This tiny cafe, in its cluster of shops behind Brighton Beach train station, is as cute as its name. The understated decor, modest menu and somewhat slow service all suggest this is just your average bayside local. However, three things correct that impression.
First, although it’s early on a Sunday morning, the place is full of locals tucking into insanely large servings of bacon and eggs. Second, from a very comfortable brown leather bench I take in stunning views of a sparking Port Phillip bay. Third, and most decisively, the coffee is exceptionally good.
A Gravity espresso wafts with an aroma of Middle Eastern spices, and on the first sip it smacks the palate with lively acidity. Rich flavours of roasted nuts and dark chocolate follow, although the aftertaste is overly bitter. My latte, however, isfaultless. The sweet silkiness of the milk perfectly matches the coffee’s punchy acidity. Softer hazelnut, almond and chocolate notes thrill my tastebuds and linger, leaving me contemplating another. This is not a book to judge by its cover.
