Despite the name, there’s nothing vinegary about this tiny deli-cafe. Instead, subtle lighting, exposed brick walls and dark furniture create a cosy atmosphere, while bold red accents provide a touch of spice. Add the stream of regulars chatting to the friendly barista over the shiny Wega machine, and you know you’re onto a good thing.
Like any good condiment, The Pickle Barrel Deli also packs a punch in the flavour stakes. The menu comprises largely rustic fare (think Wild Mushroom Quiche or Chunky Raspberry and Rhubarb Tart), while the small deli at the rear offers gourmet essentials such as olives, charcuterie and other delights -pomegranate molasses, anyone?
But it’s the coffee that really shines. Hiding below a thick caramel crema, my espresso is beautifully balanced. Rich and syrupy on the tongue, its subtle toffee undertones give way to a short velvety finish. A dash of milk rounds out the acidity, letting the natural sweetness tantalise the palate. We’ll be back.
