Art is big business at this ultra-modern cafe. But while the funky paintings adorning the walls are for sale, it’s the coffee we’re here to see – after all, owner Erin is the 2009 National Latte Art champion.
Primary is a heady mix of steel and polished concrete. However, the black ceiling and bright red accents add a bold touch to the otherwise industrial feel, while the friendly staff ensure a welcoming atmosphere. A contemporary menu offers hearty breakfasts, burgers and salads.
We score the last of the ‘single origin of the day’ beans. The resulting espresso is a tad weak – due to a dearth of said beans? – but has a pleasant floral aroma and bright acidity, with a short and refreshing aftertaste. The follow-up latte, made with the cafe’s standard blend, is also weaker than I’d prefer. However, it’s smooth and creamy with subtle chocolate undertones, and the latte art (a smiling snowman) does not disappoint. Better get in early to this one.
