10a Dover Road, Rose Bay, NSW, 2029

The local Rose Bay shops (complete with dodgy corner store) are a far cry from the neighbouring Europan Cafe. It’s an open-plan, modern euro deli-cafe, far more chic than its surroundings, and on a midweek mid-morning it’s all seniors and yummy mummies.

I order at the counter, where friendly staff tempt me with melts, baguettes and pizza; they’re successful, and I grab a chicken, cheese and avocado panini. Toasted, it’s delicious. A cabinet across from the counter is equally tempting, full of macaroons, biscotti, brownies and meringues. The caramel slice proves as tasty as it looks.

The barista delivers my coffee, and it has a thick, orange-brown crema. Interesting. The coffee isn’t as hot as you’d expect, but does pack a punch, and the rich berry flavour is complemented by sweet, winey undertones, while the aftertaste is short and a little sour. My next coffee, a long black, is at the right temperature with a sweet flourish. Overall, it’s a pleasant addition to the Rose Bay scene.
