Walking towards Bru, we see the lean, brown limbs of youngsters slumped against the walls of the cafe. They aren’t the remnants of an overnight beach rave, but Bru’s early morning patrons perch on lurid green milk crates (Bru’s only proper seating option) or simply sprawl out on the pavement, sipping espressos. Beside them, a couple of dogs sleep on a sheet of fake grass.
Welcome to Bru: a haven for Bondi’s alternative elite or those who, like us, have wandered off the main drag. Takeaways are best unless you want to wait awkwardly for someone to give up their space on the bench, and we’re pleased to discover cardboard doesn’t diminish the coffee experience.
My espresso is a vibrant hit of cherries with dark chocolate undertones; the flat white has rich cocoa and sugary molasses. It’s clear the lounging youngsters have it right, as the flavour seems designed to slacken limbs in its wake. Good thing we’re a five-minute stroll from the beach.
