Shop 6/15 Cross Street, Double Bay, NSW, 2028

The first thing that strikes us about Bar Indigo is the cafe’s versatility. It’s rare to be able to lunch on waygu beef with a South Australian shiraz, down a cosmopolitan cocktail at sundown or read the paper over a morning espresso at the same venue. Located on a quiet, boutique-laden street in the heart of Double Bay, Indigo offers all three options -and Double Bay’s locals have been quick to take advantage. It’s 10am on a weekday and the cafe is buzzing, especially out on the traffic island, where young mums congregate under large umbrellas over brunch.

Indigo’s drinks menu is an intriguing mix of exotic teas, juices and European-influenced coffee. While the espresso packs a fruity punch, the real highlight is the cafe’s “cortado leche leche” — Spanish for “short milk milk”, which translates as a piccolo latte served over a dense layer of condensed milk. The cortado goes down like a deliciously warm affogato, the sharp espresso balanced by a deluge of caramel and white chocolate. It makes an exciting change to our usual flat white. Now for that wine list…
