The Sonoma name may be synonymous with freshly baked sourdough bread, but the family-owned business also has an artisan touch when it comes to single origin coffee.
Both bread and beans squeeze onto centre stage at the bakery’s tiny Waterloo cafe -a clean and industrial-looking space stylishly decked out in concrete, wood and steel. No visit to this cafe is complete without ordering some sourdough toast, which is kindly served with a complimentary slice of fruit loaf for us to sample. The loaf has a fresh, satisfying crunch, and is the perfect accompaniment to our coffees.
As for the coffee, the espresso is a surge of dark chocolate punctuated by the slightest hint of sea salt. The flat white, on the other hand, has a raw and grassy flavour that is achingly familiar — and resolves into the distinct taste of toasted wheat. A fitting tribute to the Sonoma name.
