Shop 2/9 Danks Street, Waterloo, NSW, 2017

The Sonoma name may be synonymous with freshly baked sourdough bread, but the family-owned business also has an artisan touch when it comes to single origin coffee.

Both bread and beans squeeze onto centre stage at the bakery’s tiny Waterloo cafe -a clean and industrial-looking space stylishly decked out in concrete, wood and steel. No visit to this cafe is complete without ordering some sourdough toast, which is kindly served with a complimentary slice of fruit loaf for us to sample. The loaf has a fresh, satisfying crunch, and is the perfect accompaniment to our coffees.

As for the coffee, the espresso is a surge of dark chocolate punctuated by the slightest hint of sea salt. The flat white, on the other hand, has a raw and grassy flavour that is achingly familiar — and resolves into the distinct taste of toasted wheat. A fitting tribute to the Sonoma name.

    User Review:
Easily one of the best coffees I have had in Sydney. I have only been to the Bondi Sonoma, and boy am I glad I stumbled on it! Every hint of pretension is removed with this small cafe – they concentrate on good food and good coffee, nothing more and birthing less. The presentation of my flat white was impeccable and the taste smooth but rich. The temperature was mild which helped bring out the flavor. I’ve been to many of the supposed ‘top 10′ cafes in Sydney but Sonoma is the only one I would travel 10km for…..
