The first thing to do on entering Gallery Cafe is tilt your head back and look upwards: A multitude of playing cards are glued to the ceiling!
This is only the first in a series of interesting and bizarre visual stimuli. Vibrant colours explode from the bold chair cushions to the lime-green doors that lead to the bathroom; the walls are lined with paintings, and even the futuristic light fixtures and intricate timepieces verge on the sculptural.
The food is fresh, healthy and excellent value, with nothing on the lunch menu over $12.50. Thailand, France, Mexico and India are all represented, along with the cover-all ‘Mod Oz’.
The espresso, made with beans by Numero Uno, has a peppery flavour with bite. Its consistency is slightly watery due to a long pour, and leaves a tart aftertaste. My latte is significantly sweeter, possessing vanilla and nut-like flavours that remain on the palate. The velvety body with a light head of froth is the perfect conclusion to an outstanding lunch.
