Barista Of The Week… Zoe Lemon, Barista at
The Hungry Grasshopper, 63 Waratah Street, Haberfield
The Coffee Guide (TCG): If you weren’t a barista what would you be?
Zoe: I’d really like to illustrate and write children’s books.
TCG: How do you have your coffee at home? How do you make it and how do you take it?
Zoe: It varies, I do have a pretty good home machine, but I’ll usually just use it for a shot and then pour in cold milk.
TCG: What’s the best thing about your job- the one thing that you really love aside from the coffee?
Zoe: As opposed to an office like environment, I get to interact with people in their more relaxed state, or if they’re on their way to work you’re providing a good part of their morning.
TCG: What is your favourite music? (For work or for play).
Zoe: I’ve ruined lots of music I liked previously with overplaying, so I guess anything really as long as it’s varied.
TCG: What’s your favourite food?
Zoe: Anything my Italian stepfather makes. Even his really simple dishes are better than any restaurant I’ve been to, plus he’s really into people eating together which is something foreign to me, but endearing.
TCG: If you’re not drinking coffee, what is your drink of choice?
Zoe: Milkshakes, half nostalgia and half that they’re the best.
TCG: What made you become a barista?
Zoe: I guess because it was more challenging and creative than being a waitress.
TCG: What food do you think is the best compliment to a really great coffee?
Zoe: Something on the sweeter side, like a croissant or an awesome muffin.
TCG: Does your coffee style (or how you drink it) say something about you?
Zoe: Not really. I respect espresso drinkers though, and your no nonsense “Flat white coffee” order-ers.
TCG: Who would make a better coffee, King Kong or Godzilla?’
Zoe: Obviously the one with more human like hands?
TCG: As a barista, what’s your next big plan?
Zoe: I’m attempting to save for camera and sound equipment.
TCG: What did you do on your last day off?
Zoe: Had a picnic in the park with my friend.
TCG: Is decaf a dirty word?
Zoe: It’s alright to still want to be part of the coffee club- even if you’re sensitive.
TCG: Is specialty tea the new cappuccino?
Zoe: “Ooh they have T2”! No, but they’re a lot more into it.
TCG: What is your favourite kind of tea?
Zoe: Twinning’s Australian afternoon tea, but maybe only because I heard Kevin Rudd designed it. But it has Irish breakfast, orange pekoe and Russian caravan, which is a bit of a winning combination.
TCG: Will other brewing methods fade away?
Zoe: Sure, things can always improve and evolve.
