Sydney barista Alex Stathis wins the 2010 Danes Grand Barista Championships
Coffee aficionados gathered at the Harbord Diggers Club in Freshwater to watch the region’s top baristas compete for the crown of 2010 Danes Grand Barista Champion.
The espresso showdown saw the top 6 finalists selected out of 34 competitors from heats held in Melbourne and Sydney in the lead up, to create 12 coffees each which were then judged by a panel of industry experts. Alex Stathis from Morgans Kitchen in Liverpool emerged the winner on the day to become the Danes Grand Barista Champion. Stathis defeated a tough field of competitors and impressed the judges and crowd with her picture perfect presentation and strong consistency.
“There are some fantastic baristas here in Australia and winning against those with such a high skill level is an honor. It’s also been great to compete against people from places with an emerging coffee culture, such as Thailand and Hong Kong.”
“I’m just so happy to have won, and it feels great to be a part of a competition dedicated to celebrating beautiful coffee,” said Stathis.
For her win, Stathis takes home a deluxe barista prize package including a 2 Group Orchestrale Etnica Espresso machine, an Everpure Water Filtration System and a one years supply of Danes Gourmet Coffee.
Professional baristas weren’t the only ones getting recognition for their craft – the Danes Home Barista Competition took place alongside Saturday’s main event. Richard Tho was the winner of the inaugural competition; Jason Higgins was runner up and Nico Van Der Walt rounded out the top three.
MC on the day was local resident and former tri-athlete Nici Andronicus.
“We’re so fortunate here in Australia to have such a vibrant coffee culture; a big part of this is the skill and talent of our baristas. The Danes Grand Barista Championships is a true celebration of their commitment to creating exceptional coffee,” said Andronicus.
