Market Lane Coffee

Tucked away in a corner of the Prahran Market, this cafe and micro-roaster approaches its work with passion and knowledge. Staff will gladly explain the difference between espresso and filter (or pour-over) methods of brewing, and a blackboard diagram offers tasting notes.

We try a filter coffee made from Red Bourbon beans from El Salvador; it’s fruity and refreshing to taste, and very smooth and subtle with a short, clean finish. This is the cafe’s preferred brewing method as it’s gentle on the bean and retains nuanced flavours. The espresso uses the seasonal blend (currently a Brazilian and Kenyan mix) and exhibits citrus flavours which eventually resolve into toasted fruit-bread and cinnamon. It’s lightly oily with a rich, velvet viscosity and caramel-toffee aroma.

Market Lane Coffee also sells its single-estate and other coffees by the bag. And those overburdened by shopping jeeps or prams needn’t worry -this spacious establishment seems specially designed for encumbered shoppers.
