Four Ate Five

Open plan, eclectic and very Surry Hills, Four Ate Five oozes cool without the pretension. The light-filled, cosy cafe offers impeccable service and quality Mod Oz cuisine -all at a reasonable price. The lunch menu bears a light Eastern European influence, from the Polski ogorki (Polish brined gherkins) that accompany the Roast Beef Sandwich, to the pickled beetroots featured in the Goat’s Cheese and Almond Salad (which is absolutely delicious). Couple this with pastries by Adriano Zumbo and coffee by Single Origin Roasters, and it’s little wonder this Crown Street cafe is currently the talk of the town.

My latte is beautifully presented, adorned with coffee art that reflects skill and precision. Its aroma is bittersweet, reminiscent of burnt caramel, and similar tones lurk in its robust flavour. An espresso possesses a mellow, smoky aroma, and has a sharp flavour of unsweetened dark chocolate. Its vibrant acidity packs a punch, leaving a long aftertaste that isn’t quickly forgotten -rather like my visit to Four Ate Five.
